In order to strengthen the knowledge of indigenous and civil society communicators, as well as to join efforts for actions in favor of the protection of Indigenous Peoples in Isolation and Initial Contact (PIACI), the “First meeting of communicators for the protection of PIACI” was held in the city of Iquitos, Loreto.
The inauguration of this space was in charge of María Amelia Trigoso, Director of Indigenous Peoples in Isolation and Initial Contact of the Ministry of Culture, together with Walter López Gardillo, representative of the indigenous organization ORPIO. During the event, representatives of indigenous organizations such as FENAMAD, COMARU and ORAU spoke about peoples in isolation and initial contact, as well as the activities being developed by their own organizations.
From civil society, associations such as CIMA, WWF, CAAAP, SPDA, CEDIA, DAR, among others, shared their knowledge on the subject.
Cussi Alegría, representative of DAR, presented the work that the civil association has been doing for many years to contribute to the protection of PIACI.
This initiative was in charge of the Ministry of Culture, which through the campaign #PeruanosComoTú seeks to join efforts to guarantee the protection of the PIACI, avoiding the weakening of Law 28736, a law created to guarantee the protection of these peoples.
At the end of the event, the communicators in attendance agreed to join efforts to advocate for the protection of peoples in isolation and initial contact, especially in a context in which the law that supports them could be modified, thus reducing the standards that are in place to safeguard their lives. It is worth noting that this event, held on the 15th of this year, had a similar event for journalists in the region, which was held the following day, with the objective of keeping them informed about the importance of their work in the protection of PIACIs.
